Resorting again to the seemingly endless archives of the New York Times, I read an article about rooftop bars around Manhattan and made it a priority to visit one on our Friday night in the city. Thanks once more to Yelp, Brendan and I found one such bar at the Standard Hotel, a hip boutique hotel in the Meatpacking District, a mere five minute walk from our hotel and hovering above The Highline. We arrived early (around 7pm) so as to avoid any line-ups or cover charges, bought a drink at the bar with the best view I’ve ever seen, and settled into some chairs beside the glass fence that lined the edge of the rooftop.
The bar itself is funky and perfect for summer nights; gigantic round pink waterbed sofas are scattered around the astro-turf floor, tables, chairs and deck-chairs are available for guests to move as they please to score the best view, and inflatable hot tubs reside in the corner, inviting people to partake in some extreme relaxation. And if you weren’t prepared for a hot tub session, the swimsuit vending machine at the entrance will take care of that!
We sat for about an hour admiring the view, trying not to be blown away by Hurricane Earl as it brushed past Manhattan, and watching the sun set over the Big Apple.
It was a wonderful way to spend our last evening in New York City; the incredible view was mesmerizing, and the time we chose to come here was perfect, as we were able to watch the sun set and the lights come up over this incredible concrete jungle. Our time at The Standard rooftop bar was the definite highlight of our three whirlwind days in New York, and I left on an absolute high. If you’re in NYC, you MUST visit a rooftop bar; I just can’t recommend it highly enough (no pun intended)!
