Today marks exactly one month since we left Australia, and on Tuesday we will have been in England for four weeks, having arrived, excited and nervous, to set up a life for ourselves here. It has been a strange, exciting and disconcerting journey so far, but even in the short time that we have been in London a lot has happened. Over the next few weeks I will attempt to catch up on blogging about some of the more exciting things we’ve experienced between the countless moments of boredom and frustration.
For now, I will just give the briefest of recaps for those readers who are curious about what we are busying ourselves with:
Upon our arrival in London we stayed with some lovely and generous friends in their lovely house with their lovely housemates and it was, in a word, lovely. We then found a place to live on a beautiful street in a great neighbourhood, very close to two tube stations and just 15 minutes into the heart of London. After looking at some undesirable accommodation (a hotel-room clone, a house shared with creepy Italian witches and an apartment in the ghetto that we were too scared to even look at), we were so grateful to have a room in a large, bright, well-located house, sharing with people who seem, so far, to be very nice and not at all creepy.
We busied ourselves during the day with job hunting. An awful, awful way to spend a gloriously sunny day with nothing scheduled, but alas – we could not afford to just have a holiday here, and so we searched. And we interviewed. And we searched some more. After less than a month we have both been placed in temporary assignments; mine looks like it has the potential to become permanent, and Brendan is temping while he studies to get his tourism certificate.
We have bank accounts (finally), we have Tesco Club cards, we have started to get to know the staff in the French Patisserie down the road and on the whole, it feels like we are starting to settle here. Thanks to everyone for your kind words of encouragement, your emails and Facebook messages and your prayers. We’re very grateful and we are starting to get very excited to explore this great country and wonderful continent! Stay tuned…
